United Rentals has solutions to create safe, temporary pedestrian walkways for construction zones.
What are the benefits of covered walkways?
Temporary walkway systems are essential for any construction site that may interrupt the flow of foot traffic in an area, such as city blocks, busy intersections and other crowded locales. Closed sidewalks may block access for pedestrians with disabilities and may increase the danger for everyone on foot. They can also often violate city policy. Temporary pedestrian walkways are a solution to this issue.
What solutions can covered walkways provide?
At United Rentals, we know safety is a top priority, and having covered walkway systems that keep passersby safe provides peace of mind on a construction site. A covered walkway provides an enclosed pathway for pedestrians, keeping foot traffic away from construction and sidewalks open. We also carry road plates for applications where coverage is of no concern, but construction still interrupts traffic.
Storage containers are the ideal structure for on-site covered walkway systems during construction. Also known as hoardings, covered walkways allow pedestrians to walk safely through and around the jobsite. We also offer custom storage containers so you can outfit your enclosed walkways with extra lighting, handrails and more. Our storage container and mobile office experts are happy to consult with you on the most suitable enclosed walkway solution for your next project.
Another alternative for scaffolding walkways, a covered walkway offers ease of set-up, and United Rentals offers timely delivery on our storage containers. These units will not be affected by heavy winds and provide additional overhead protection to pedestrians.
These 14-gauge ISO-type dry cargo steel containers are excellent protection from construction debris or falling objects. These containers are constructed with steel frames, fully vertically corrugated steel sides and end walls, a corrugated steel roof, wood flooring, and double-hinged doors. They have ISO corner fittings at each of the eight corners. By removing the container doors and cutting an opening on the opposite end, workers or pedestrians can now enter and walk through.
Temporary pedestrian walkway rentals can be tailored to meet your specific needs. For instance, we offer interiors with full lighting and electrical capabilities. These units can also be connected or have spaces between the walkways for additional access points. Shipping container walkways can be customized or modified from a basic unit to adapt to each worksite.
Some other examples of common modifications that the United Rentals team can provide on covered pedestrian walkways include:
- ADA accessibility/wheelchair accessibility
- Lighting
- Variety of flooring options (epoxy floors, non-slip carpet, etc.)
- Handrails (helpful with inclines)
- Picture frame window openings
- Easy transition floor plates and ramps
Containers are stackable. Walkways are structurally strong enough to accommodate multiple walkway levels. For construction sites that lack space, walkways can be placed at ground level, and GLOs (ground level offices) can be stacked above.
When your construction project is complete, all that's left to do is lift the individual container units out of the work zone. Then, you can ship them to your next work site on a standard freight truck.
Storage containers offer safety to pedestrians and structural integrity for temporary or permanent on-site walkways.
