Know your machine: Telehandlers

Telehandlers are used to lift loads and place materials on site.

Hiring a telehandler gives you access to a really versatile piece of equipment, helping you to lift and place palletised or non-palletised goods.

What are telehandlers used for?

They are particularly handy in multi-storey projects where a forklift doesn’t allow enough reach to get materials up in the air, or at tricky angles.

In contrast to a conventional forklift, a telehandler (also known as a telescopic handler) has a boom that allows you to achieve greater reach, as well as move goods back and forth and diagonally, something that isn’t achievable with a forklift.

Their large base makes them incredibly stable, and they can be used for just about anything from lifting loads of palletised materials like steel or timber up to multi-deck construction sites, through to dismantling prior to remodelling, moving loads from trucks, packing containers, and site cleanup.

Telehandlers easily transport loads and are ideal for any sites where you have narrow or limited access, as well as different types of excavation, materials handling and refurbishment tasks.

Orange Hire (now United Rentals) has a range of different sized telehandlers for hire in our fleet, all of which are a great addition to job sites where you need to lift and shift large amounts of supplies.

Telehandler Components

A telehandler is made up of a large stable wheelbase, an enclosed operator cab for increased safety, and a long boom lift arm. It also features outriggers for extra stability.

Easy to manoeuvre and very stable, a telehandler is a bit like a cross between a crane and a forklift, using different attachments fitted to the end of the boom to enable the movement of different varieties of goods.

Attachments for telehandlers

Adding an attachment to your telehandler means that your rental machine just got even more versatile. Attachments such as pallet forks, buckets, and work platforms can be hired and offer different steering modes, making it easy for you to move goods efficiently, shift loose material like earth, and move personnel safely using a work platform.

Quick hitch systems, like those on our excavators, allow for fast switching of attachments on site.

Choosing a telehandler

Telescopic handlers are categorised by their lifting capacity and reach, and Orange Hire carries models in our fleet ranging from small 3t machines through to 9t machines.

Machines typically have a specified maximum lifting height and forward reach, so think about your site and what jobs you need to get done to ensure you choose the right model.
