7 Ways To Use a Steel Road Plate

Steel Road Plates are a common sight on construction sites due to their incredible durability and robustness, making them an excellent solution for a wide variety of on-site applications.

Here are seven of the most common uses of Steel Road Plates:

1. Excavation Protection

One of the most common uses of Steel Road Plates is installing them over open excavations to help prevent accidents, and ensure the safety of workers and pedestrians. They can also protect trenches, and the work that’s being done in them from adverse weather conditions like heavy rain, snow, and wind. When using Steel Road Plates as temporary ‘lids’ for excavations, engineering sign-off is typically required, and stiffener beams may need to be welded onto the plates to reduce deflection, especially on major roads.

2. Pedestrian Access

Steel Road Plates are often used to create safe pathways for pedestrians on construction sites. They can cover a number of hazards, including excavations, trenches, or uneven or dangerous pathways.

3. Driveway Access

Steel Road Plates can be installed at the beginning of driveways, along curbs, or over gutters to ensure a safe and stable surface for vehicles and pedestrians to travel across.

4. Crane Access

Due to their substantial weight, cranes may encounter unstable or unsafe footing on certain construction sites. Steel Road Plates can help reinforce the ground and provide a reliable foundation for cranes and other heavy construction equipment.

5. Road Crossings and Temporary Works

When excavations, maintenance work, and other types of construction happen on roads, Steel Road Plates can be installed on roadways to help minimise traffic disruptions or create a temporary section of road that vehicles can drive over.

6. Construction Protection

When placed directly on concrete surfaces, Steel Road Plates protect the surface from potential damage caused by heavy loads, equipment, foot traffic, and other impacts.

7. End Plates for Shoring Boxes

Steel Road Plates can also be used as end plates in excavations or trenches when using traditional shoring to provide support at the end of the trench. They are especially useful as end shoring when a shoring panel is too large, and a smaller solution is needed. All of our Steel Road Plates come with four corner lifting points, allowing the plates to be lifted vertically, and easily placed into an excavation.
